Feature Story

Elizabeth is a herbalist in Edmonton.  She sends out a wonderful newsletter quarterly with some amazing information about healing
and herbs.  This article is only a fraction of what is in her newsletter and is definitely worth getting a hold of.  Herbs are a powerful
healing tool that not only help with different conditions, they actually aid in healing the condition and / or organ being affected.  This
healing is more long term and beneficial while not masking the situation.  Following is a part of Elizabeth’s article for April 2008
                                                ASTHMA
A complex condition involving inflammation and over-reaction of the airways. It is one of the most widespread chronic diseases, and
the fourth leading cause of work days lost.
Many things contribute to this condition, including:
Mold                          • Obesity                                  • Antibiotic treatment during first year of life
• Allergies        .           • Remaining indoors                • Living in western society
• Salt                            • Second-hand-smoke             • Stress
• Menopause

Preventing Asthma: some of the things shown to prevent Asthma include:
Breast-feeding                         Fish oil                                                 Antioxidants
Avoiding sulfates                     Physical activity                                   Swimming
Eating apples and fish during pregnancy
Herbs for Asthma: the herbal approach to asthma involves many factors, including prevention, exercise, diet, and herbs.  Herbs
themselves are used to address many aspects of the condition such as, allergen response, inflammation, promoting healthy
mucous membranes, improving digestion, preventing further infection, a healthy adrenal system, healthy liver function, preventing
spasm, bronchodilation, and antioxidant levels. What’s more, modern science is slowly providing more and more evidence of what
herbalists have known for generations... herbs work. Here are just some of the herbs that can be effectively used in cases of asthma:
Liqorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)                           Ginkgo biloba
Tumeric (Curcuma longa)                                Butterbur (Petasites hybridus)
Onion (Allium cepa)                                         Ephedra (Ephedra sinica)
Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)                                 Coleus (forskohlii; Plectranthus barbatus)
Tylophora (Tylophora asthmatica)                   Ivy (Hedera helix)
Eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis)                      Echinacea
Ginger (Zingeber officinalis)

Health Corner
(food alternatives & heath)
Detoxing our bodies and changing our food diet at the same time can be beneficial in two ways:
1.  When we choose a whole body Detox, we can clean our liver and our colon: which in turn has a good effect on the rest of our
body and helps to increase our energy.
2. Changing our diets to eliminate wheat, dairy, alcohol, vinegars and sugars during the detox not only aids in the cleansing but
can make us aware of what could be causing health problems.
The spring time and early fall are the best time to do a Detox, yet once in a while our bodies do tell us to do one in the winter.
If you have that strong urge to do a detox, honor your intuition and do one.   There are many detox programs on the market and you
need to find the one that is suitable for your needs at the time.   Some of the reasons are:  candida, constipation, diarrhea,
environmental sensitivities and a general cleansing.
a.  Candida requires a strict diet of no wheat, dairy, alcohol, vinegars or sugars.  The person would consider to also take a probiotic
during the cleanse.  Candida in many cases in caused by the over use on antibiotics during ones life and causes the body to get yeast
infections and a lot more symptoms.  Consult your health store for candida cleansing and some may have a list that you can go through
to see if you have the various symptoms.
b. Environmental sensitivities; in many cases can cause a lot of damage to the liver and other organs in the body.  One must be
careful when doing a detox, some of the herbs many be too strong for the system at the time.  Consider doing a homeopathic detox
and start very slowly.  The homeopathic detox's are gentle yet very effective.
c.  Bowels:  whether constipated or experiencing constant diarrhea, you want the right cleansing program to address the right issue.
There are programs for each that provide the right minerals and herbs to help heal the organ and provide the strength for the colon to
function better.
d.  General Cleansing program:  there are some detox programs ex: Wild Rose Detox (which I really like and have used) that requires
that you eliminate wheat, dairy, alcohol, vinegars and sugars during the detox.  This and others with the same requirement are working
with your colon and liver.  When you are finished the program it is an idea to slowly introduce the wheat, and dairy back into your diet.
You may find that your body will react to these foods, and is letting you know that the foods are not healthy for you to consume.  There
are other cleansing programs that do not have the diet recommendations and can be a lot easier to do when leading a busy life and
these too will work with cleansing the body.
I personally believe that no matter what program you decide to go with, start off slowly with the detox.  For me, my system is
sensitive and not matter what I take in herbs, vitamins, minerals etc, I always take half of what is required and let my system adjust
to it first before deciding whether I need to increase the amount.  Sometimes we don’t need the full amount that is recommended on
labels, the label requirements are a guideline.   We all have different systems, we all have been exposed to different things and many
of us react to things stronger than others.  Keep in mind that if your Homeopathic practitioner, doctor or Naturopath has recommended
something, there is a reason behind it.  And always to mention if you are taking meds prescribed by a doctor, some meds do not
work with herbs.   I am in no way prescribing anything, I am just sharing what I have seen, experienced and heard.

(herbs)   Pau d’arco: comes from the inner bark from a tree that grows in the rain forest.  The tree grows to 30 metre high and
2 – 3 metres wide.  The species called the T. impetiginosa has attractive purple flowers, called the “purple laoacho” is the widely
used species in herbal medicine.
Main strengths:  antibacterial, antifungal, anticandidal, anticancerous, anti-inflammatory, antiparasitic, anti-insecticidal, analgesic.
Used for: immune system: colds, viruses, respiratory system, and flues, allergies, rheumatism.
Cleansing: for candida, fungal infections, sexually transmitted diseases, blood Cleanser, leukemia, tumors, parasites, liver,
Aids, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and ulcers.
Skin: for psoriases, dermatitis and warts
Summary: when I was gathering notes for my every growing herb records: Pau d’arco kept on coming up in all the newer sources
of information.  The herbal remedy is and has been used by the native people in the rain forests for hundreds of years.  The wood is
used for: bows and arrows (the strength needed for the pressure used), housing etc.  I have seen the Pau d’arco in capsules, yet
some of the suggested uses are tinctures and concoctions.  Take a peak at Rain Tree Data Base (link below), wonderful source of
information.  Next time you are picking out a herbal remedy, note whether or not there is Pau d’arco in it.

MUSIC   ♫ ♫ ♫
A suggestion was made by a dear friend to add a music section.  In the last two months I have had the privilege to hear the music
of Crystal Bowls, Tibet Bowls and Gongs.  We will be starting with a CD with Crystal Bowls and singing: music that was channeled
and that is amazing to hear.
Elemental Journeys with Crystal Singing Bowls” by Natalie Fortier of Breakthrough Sound.  She sent me this information:  “My
CD is being sold in the city by the Divine Mine, Soul Food Books and the Replenishing Shoppe as well as you can go to my website
at www.breakthroughsound.com.  It is only a cover page at the moment but anyone can e-mail me from there.”   I have heard Natalie’s
CD and enjoyed every second of it.  Healing, relaxing and peaceful.
