Feature Story
                                                        Canada’s Wholistic & Alternative Directory

Going to share a wee story on why Canada’s Wholistic & Alternative Directory was started for all of us.

I am a practitioner that is working at building my practice and have the opportunity to work from home.  In 2006, I was driving in the city to two of my favorite stores, Soul Food Books (19th St. just north of Kensington) and Earth Gems (10th St. and 17th Ave.).   Was pondering on how I can decrease the amount that I was spending on advertising and how could I cover a bigger region.

Some ideas came to mind, and wanted to write it all down.   When I got closer to Earth Gems, I wrote every thing down and was surprised with all the ideas.  Later I was told that this info was divinely provided and I was been guided to start a wholistic community and more.  We are very fortunate to have many communities working to provide us with information on environmental options.  I felt so honored to be directed to the directory.  It took awhile to get off the ground as I did research and looked for feed back.  I did have one person that really helped out, yet when Robert mentioned just covering Calgary and Area, I knew that it was limiting and was I going to cover the province.   Last fall we opened up to Canada.

For the practitioners that are reading this, please do go to:  www.abwholisticdirectory.com and see what we have to offer.   There are some amazing sites and directories available, and I am always adjusting for improvements and want you and others to find what you are looking for, to do so with ease.  This site may be simple, yet it is very effective and when you take the time to look for other information, I am still amazed at what I have put together for all of us.  For my newsletters, I do a lot of research and noted the new info on the web site in the sites of interest or related pages.

Our directory is listed in two different ways.  http://www.abwholisticdirectory.com/direct.html
- Directory by Practitioner http://www.abwholisticdirectory.com/directorybyprac.html  Here you can find what the practitioners are offering, write up of the practitioners and their web site links.  Ex:  if you go to Reiki, you will find several Reiki Practitioners and their information, credentials and experience.
- Directory by City / Town:  This section shows the town and cities.  Each town / city has the listing of services being offered and the contact information.  This also has the linking to the practitioner / suppliers web site.

Not only do we offer the web site listing under two sections, and you have up to 5 specialty listings, we provide a lot of additional exposure in the newsletter.  Featured members on the site and in the newsletter each month, rotating business cards, and 3 additional advertising postings during the year.  If someone calls or emails, I will direct them to you for your services.   This is only $55.00 a year, covering Canada.   I pay from $22.00 to $48.00 per month for some of the local town papers for a business card placement in the newspaper.

Canada’s Wholistic & Alternative Directory is here for you, to support your and share with your neighbours, new and old of what is available to them for natural and alternative healing.

(how to keep your family allergy & toxin free)

            Continuation from June 2006
The info in red was found in products in my home………

8. PEG (Polyethylene Glycol): made by ethoxylating Propylene Glycol.  Dangerous levels of dioxin have been found as a by product of the ethoxylation process.  PEG’s are in everything including personal care, baby care and sunscreens.  Found in Body Butter, and Refreshing Toner.
8. Phthalates:  Xenoestrogens are commonly found in many products, usually not listed on labels.  Health effects include damage to liver / kidneys, birth defects, decreased sperm counts and early breast development in girls and boys.
9. Propylene Glycol (PG) & Butylene Glycol:  Petroleum plastics act as surfactants (wetting agents, solvents).  EPA considers PG so toxic it requires protective gloves, clothing, goggles and disposal by burying.  Because PG penetrates skin so quickly, EPA warns against skin contact to prevent brain, liver and kidney abnormalities.  There is no warning label on products where concentration is greater than in most industrial applications.  Found in Body Butter, Firm & Glow Body Moisturizer, Mineral Therapy Body Lotion, Anti Hair Frizz, and Baby Lotion.
10. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES):  Detergents and surfactants that pose serious health threats.  Used in car washes, garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers and 90% of personal care products that foam.  Animals exposed to SLS experienced eye damage, depression, labored breathing, diarrhea, severe skin irritation – even death.  SLS may also damage skins immune system by causing layers to separate, inflame and age.  Found in Liquid hand soap, shower gel, 2 in 1 shampoo, and Baby Body Wash.
11. Sunscreen Chemicals:  avobenzone, benzphenone, ethoxycinnamate, PABA are commonly used ingredients that are known free radical generators and are believed to damage DNA or lead to cancers. Found in Shower gel.
12. Triclosan:  Synthetic “antibacterial” ingredient with chemical structure similar to Agent Orange.  EPA registers it as a pesticide, posing risks to human health and environment.  Classified as a chlorophenol, chemicals suspected of causing cancer in humans.  Tufts University School of Medicine says Triclosan is capable of forcing emergence of super bugs, it cannot kill.

Also check out: www.skindeep.ca  This site will show you what toxic ingredients are in your products – even done by brand name.

(food alternatives & heath)

A thought came to mind:  I have a granddaughter that just passed into grade three.  Being the now easy going grandma, yet conscientious of what goes into her lunch, I try to provide a little bit of everything for her day at school.

Over the last couple of months I have heard her mention that she is too fat, or trying to look skinnier.  How foods are fattening and have too many calories.   Yet this young lady is a very active and a healthy eater.  I really do wonder on the message that parents are sharing.  It is good to read labels: chemicals, calories, fats and sugars.  Yet are the kids being directed to look at the vitamins and minerals, the fibers and good fats?  I am going to start reading these ingredients to the young lady and explain why she should not say no to some of the foods that her friends are saying no to.    Are these kids trying to be those very unhealthy and skinny models that you see on the TV.   I would not want to walk in their shoes.

Her first complaint in her lunches is home made bread.  Sure wheat is not that great, but the bread I make is better tasting that what is found in the stores and not loaded with preservatives.   Is she comparing it to what the kids are eating?  Do they not know what home made is?  Do they get any fibres or grain products?  Do they know what is in their store bought bread and buns?

The first food that comes into our home is vegetables and fruit.  Then the other supplements.  We all love our veggies’,  higher energy, loaded with vitamins and minerals and the fruit with the other nutrients our bodies require.  Below under my fav wholistic / alternative: are some sites with the information that I will be sharing with her.

We are fortunate to be able to compare my grand daughters’ health with some other little gals the same age.  Intuitively I feel that one on them is not getting the vitamins and specially the minerals that she needs.  Her daily actions seem to really reflect that and the mood swings that goes with it.  The other one is getting heavier as she is allowed to eat as much pasta, spuds, etc as she wants to fill up.   She is more lethargic and not having the energy the other one has.  When they get in front a platter of real food that is good, they won’t leave till it is clean.    Yet they are both attracted to the junk food as that is what they see all the time and will not leave it alone.   My grand daughter has her fill of the junk food really fast and will not consume much of it.   I was raised on very little pop or chips in the home and am still like that.  I have no great desire to consume the stuff.  Of course it is a treat, maybe once every couple of months or so if I go some where and being offered.

In summary: what can you do to compromise with the young ones on what goes into their lunches.  I know that when I go shopping, I get more nutrients and satisfied taste buds by going to the veggie isle, or even making a bowl of popcorn (fibre) than hitting the chip isle.  I don’t like buying processed meats, (usually the taste along tells you something is not right) or the prepacked lunch packs.  Are we ready to teach the young ones the real value of food and not what their buddies are trying to share by comparing the waist line?

(herbs and more)

In Mays newsletter we had: L-Glutamine and L-Taurine.  wanted to add a couple more amino acids:

L-Tyrosine:  this Amino Acid is derived from phenylalanine.  This one is very important in order for our overall metabolism and nervous system to work properly.  L-Tyrosine is essential in order for the adrenaline, the neurotransmitters and the dopamine to be properly regulated.

When there is not enough tyrosine it can lead to depression as the brain is not producing enough norepinephrine.  The tyrosine also is a mild antioxidant which can suppress hunger and it helps to reduce body fat.   The amino acid helps in the function of the thyroid, pituitary and adrenal glands.
When the body is lacking in L-Tyrosine, it results in a low body temperature, low blood pressure and also restless legs.  This amino acid is also used to relieve Parkinson’s, chronic fatigue and narcolepsy.

Tyrosine can be found in foods such as: almonds, bananas, pumpkin seeds, dairy, lima beans and sesame seeds.

L-Lysine:  This one is the building block for all protein.  For all ages Lysine is needed for calcium absorption, bone building for children, and maintaining a proper nitrogen balance in adults.

This amino acid is very good at fighting cold sores and herpes viruses.  Using L-Lysine with a Vitamin C (containing bioflavoids) can be used to avoid or prevent herpes outbreaks.   Acute alcohol intoxication has been treated with the L-Lysine.  Other conditions can occur when the body is not deficient of L-Lysine: hair loss, anemia, red eyes, lack of concentration, irritable, reproductive disorders, and weight loss.

L-Lysine can be found in the following foods:  eggs, fish, yeast, red meat, milk, lima beans, potatoes, soy, and cheese.
