Feature Story
Life is like Playing Hearts
Hearts is a simple and fun card game. Computers come preloaded with it.
While playing it occurred to me life was just like Hearts. I play
often. Play relaxes me and lets my mind go free. In that relaxation I
go into an altered state. My mind wanders where it will and soft
thoughts come unbidden. This is the great advantage to altered states.
Awareness comes upon us.
Recently in a game of Hearts the computer dealt me a hand of all low
cards and it wasn’t possible to strategize, to shoot the moon (take all
the spades) or even take a single trick. The computer had dealt only
boring, low cards. I just had to sit there playing each round knowing it
was just something to get through until the next hand.
Life is sometimes like that, it seems that you have been dealt a boring
hand. There is nothing to do and you are just biding your time, waiting
until something exciting comes along. Sometimes in Hearts you get stuck
with the Queen of spades… Big and Ugly, as I call her. You don’t seem
able to avoid her.
Although it’s just a game, you can feel very disheartened if you’ve been
trying to win and now you get stuck with her. No one in the game is
trying to stick it to you. It’s a computer for heaven sake! It’s just
part of the experience. If I get stuck with her several games in a row,
I get frustrated and usually fold that game and start another one fresh.
It just feels like I need a new start. I can release the old and begin
again. After all, it is my choice.
Players, in real life and especially on a computer, can do this easily.
But many simply remain stuck and discouraged, feeling they have to see
it through to the end. They have lost creativity in their lives, bought
the conservative and judgmental teachings of society and believe the
‘shoulds’ and ‘have tos’ of their childhood educators. It’s time to
break out and think for yourself.
In that altered state of being that a game can bring, decide who you
want to be in relation to the game. Do you want to be stuck, oppressed,
happy, in charge, playful, angry and frustrated or just observe what is
going on inside of you? Then make a decision based on how you feel. You
can observe that feeling, perform it or shift your mood. This is the
real teaching of play and life. We get to go inside and see how we feel
and from that vantage point, how to create then next now in our lives.
Our exact mood is reflected in the game. If we’re angry, we miss a play,
or lose track of the cards; we’re just not focused and the play goes
badly. If we’re happy and relaxed and focused, the game flows and we
can laugh at whatever happens.
We must remember everyone in the game of hearts or the game of life is
just playing to achieve the best for themselves! Each one is in control
of his or her role in the game. Players aren’t doing anything to you.
You‘re not a victim because you got stuck with Big and Ugly. You didn’t
do anything wrong. It’s not your fault. It’s just part of the larger
picture of possibilities. It’s just a game.
The same is true in life. Things aren’t done to you; they are done for
you. If you can stand back and look from your higher spiritual self and
stop thinking like a victim, you will see the higher reason for things
that happen. You may not always know what the reason is, but you can at
least align with knowing there is a grander perspective. You will know
that you, as the creator you are, had a plan for your soul’s highest
growth in these seemingly mundane situations. Stick with that thought.
It’s the real truth.
The Abraham teachings and “The Secret” movie say we create everything
that happens to us and I quite agree. So we ask how did we create
getting stuck with the Queen time after time or with a boring hand? We
created the WHOLE game. We wanted to play and part of signing up for
that game (AKA life) is to experience all the parts of it including
getting stuck with Big and Ugly. She is a metaphor in real life for
tragedy, crisis, upset and disaster. In the next moment you may be
happily shooting the moon three times in a row and winning the game. No
one is making you a victim. This is a game we chose to play.
Times are tough for many right now and it doesn’t feel like a game. Your
real job is to remember it really is a game and in the next deal
everything will change and you might just shoot the moon. Everything
is what we signed up for. Our part in this game of life is to decide
who and what we want to be in relationship to what cards are in our
hand. Do we want to be the angry player who gets irate we got bad cards;
or the overly serious player who is much too solemn to have any fun; or
the reactionary player who rudely comments on every play as though it
were a personal attack? It’s all a choice.
Remember, it’s just a
game you started. Play!

Health Corner
(how to keep your family allergy & toxin free)
Summer is somewhere around the corner, and I know we are getting tiny
peaks of it here and there.
Before you head
outdoors into the sun, look into some of the sunscreens in the health
stores. Find the sunscreens that are safer and without the toxins. In
next months newsletter we have a huge feature article on toxins in the
products on the shelves and at the end a link to a site where you can
check on the ingredients in your favorite products.
www.skindeep.ca is a start for you to check out the sunscreens. We
did use a sunscreen for the kids that had very sensitive skin and would
love to know now what was in it. Was is really safe?
The reason why I am
emphasizing on this it that we can get sun dots, or blemishes on our
skin and start to age faster than we need to, in appearance. I spent
three summers in the gardens and love to wear my shorts. Well…. this
year I am looking into the sunscreens as my legs are getting the sun
dots. My grand daughter will be wearing a fuller bathing suit this
year and a safer sunscreen and she got a dark patch on her back that
hasn’t yet faded too much.
Enjoy the sun, we
sure could do with a good blast of Vitamin D this summer after the long
winter, but do be safe.
(herbs and more)
Had a herb already picked out for this one, but in a quit mood the L-‘s
came to mind. When we go into a health and herbal store there are so
many products, that we have no idea what they are for and never think to
ask. We will cover 2 of them, the L’s as I think of them, and hopefully
provide some info that you may use or share in the near future.
Amino Acids:
Amino acids are
what make up the proteins or building blocks. They also contain
nitrogen that sugars and fatty acids don’t contain. Proteins are, next
to water, one of the most important and basic necessities of life, from
a tiny microbe to the largest animal. Every living cell in our body
needs proteins to function and do its job. From the blood to the organs
and hair.
L-Glutamine:
is an amino
acid that helps with cell repair in the following: sports injuries and
training, substance abuse, supplement for burns and tissue healing,
along with preventing secondary infections from burns. Also used for
treating the following: arthritis and autoimmune diseases, fibrosis,
tissue damage from radiation for cancer treatments, peptic ulcers, and
intestine problems.
L-Glutamine is known to be a brain food or fuel, and turns to glutamic
acid when it hits the brain. This glutamic acid is necessary for the
function of the cerebral and increase the amount of GABA that we need
for proper brain and mental activities. This amino acid is used for
many brain related problems such as: depression, development delays and
disabilities.
L-Glutamine helps the body to not crave sugar as much while it works
with the liver. The used of L-Glutamine helps with recovering
alcoholics as ones craving for the alcohol and sugar goes down. But one
needs to be cautioned not to use this amino acid when cirrhosis of the
liver is present or problems with the kidneys, as it will intoxicate the
body more. Found in raw spinach and parsley.
L-Taurine:
This amino acid is found in animal proteins like eggs, milk, fish and
meat. Taurine is part found in our blood cells and heart muscles, the
nervous system and our skeletal muscles. We require the Taurine in our
bile so that we can easily digest fats, vitamins and helps to control
the serum cholesterol levels in our body.
With the proper Taurine levels the calcium, magnesium, sodium and
potassium that we consume is better utilized and not stored wrong to
cause health issues. Patients with hypertension, hypoglycemia, edema
and heart disorders benefit with the use of Taurine. Others treatments
used with Taurine: dehydration, seizures, hyperactivity, anxiety, and
epilepsy. Zinc and Taurine are both connected with proper brain
function and the lack of both can cause the seizures or the brain to not
develop properly. It is also suggested that vegetarians have an
supplement of Taurine in their diet.

Community Garden
Resource Network
We've created this
online forum in response to requests from community gardeners wanting a
place to ask questions, share ideas and get answers to questions about
growing food in Calgary's climate and soil. The way it works is that
community gardeners post questions that are answered by fellow gardeners
about growing vegetables, fruit, grains and herbs at high altitude in
Calgary. Anyone can read the archives. Anyone can join, but only
members of the group can post messages, view the members list, create
pages and upload files.
The Forum will be
unmoderated and unmonitored and is meant to be run by the Calgary
community gardeners. When a question cannot be answered by community
gardeners there is the option to submit the question to the Calgary
Horticultural Society's "Ask An Expert" service that is available from
the Society's web site located at
http://www.calhort.org
The address
of the Forum is:
