October 2010                                                                                                           Issue # 49

Just a wee note before we start the month:
From around Nov. 13th to December 18th (5 weeks) I will be on an amazing journey in Australia.  My brother blessed me with a ticket to go there so that I can see the country that he is living in and where my Dad grew up.
If you have workshops, new membership, etc. that you need posted for December 2010 and January 2011, please send it within this month.  I would like to have everything ready to post for you.    Blessings,  Kim

Essential Oils & Aroma Therapy

Essential Oils are amazing to work with.  From all the different fresh and relaxing scents to all the different healing properties.

Essential oils have been used since the beginning of time, whether using oils in teas to oils or in healing ointments.  Oils are derived from fruits, flowers and herbs.  Rose oil as a rose water, or many of us remember grandmothers lavender perfume or soaps, eucalyptus oils for the chest, oregano oils to ward off colds and flus and calendula oils for healing wounds and more.    We have many more oils to work with now and many different combinations that we can use on a daily basis.

The clean oils should have no chemicals and have not been cut or diluted, have been extracted from the plant and not mechanically reproduced.  Essential oils are known as ethereal oils or volatile oils and they are the essence of the plant that they came from.   Most oils are either extracted by the process of distillation or solvent extraction.

Oils that are extracted (place into a alembic over water, the heated water causes the plant material to vapourize and the oils (vapours) flow through a coil where they cool off and become a liquid that is collected.  This kind of process produces water products such as rose water or orange blossom water.

Oils such as citrus oils are cold pressed or mechanically expressed.  Your citrus oils are excellent anti bacterial oils and are wonderful to use for cleaning the house with.  They leave a nice scent in the home without leaving chemicals in the air (like air fresheners that can cause nerological damage to the body).

Oils, such as many of the flower oils are extracted by using ethyl alcohol.  But with this method there is a second process to extract the ethyl alcohol to leave behind the absolute (oils.)

Today we are using the essential oils for relaxation techniques, massage therapy, aromatherapy, in cooking, incense, perfumes, soaps, cleaning products, air fresheners, physical and emotional healing, bug repellant, hair lice and different combinations to provide healing.  Instead of buying a perfume, purchase an essential oil, not only with it provide healing properties, they smell a lot better and don’t pollute the air.

True Abundance
by: Pamela Shelly

What is true abundance?  To me it is accepting the current circumstances of our lives, knowing we are the Creators and taking action to create new circumstances if we are out of alignment in any area.  True abundance is being in grateful for everything in our lives, the positive and negative aspects.  Without both aspects we would not be able to grow, learn and experience the variety of adventures we set up for ourselves in this lifetime.  Our minds cannot even begin to fathom all the potentialities, probabilities and immense orchestration taking place behind the scenes that become our opportunities.  These opportunities come in the form of meeting friends, employers, co-workers, the city, country and homes we are to live in, the pets we have, our children and the list goes on.  All of these events have been written into our Soul Contracts and we have the free will to follow our moment-to-moment guidance or veer to the left, right, or turn around and try and run away!!

How we each create and attract the events and people in our lives is a very complex equation.  Our circumstances depend on what we wrote into our Soul Contract to learn, if we are in alignment, what karma we came in with and how we perceive life.  Our perception can make all the difference in the world.  The great thing about perception is that we can shift it in a moment profoundly affecting how we experience life.  We have all seen incredibly inspirational stories of how people with great challenges and adversity not only cope with life but excel at it. They are often the greatest teachers and role models to their community, country or humanity at large.  They have made the decision to make a difference and live life to the fullest in spite of their personal hardships.  Although they may have had periods of grieving and self-pity, in the end they choose to surrender, accept what challenges they are faced with and then they get on with it.  They don’t wallow in self-pity, act like victims of their circumstances, ask over and over “Why me?” instead they say “Why not me?”

I have found over the years in the holistic field that many people have had difficulty charging a reasonable rate for their services.  After spending years in training and thousands of dollars, they still don’t value their worth.  We don’t hesitate to pay for others services but when it comes to receiving we rationalize our inability to accept abundance.  Many are still running on old tapes from past lives with vows of servitude, poverty, sacrifice etc.  I have watched clients charge a donation or a very small fee only to see how that often backfires on them.  They attract the people who will take advantage and not appreciate the service or they won’t get clients coming back to them because it sets up an inequality between two people.  I have said that if Joe is charging $20 an hour for a healing session and Steve is charging $120 an hour then Steve may get more business.  The reason is people perceive Steve is much better at healing than Joe!  I am not encouraging you to overcharge but to price yourself fairly based on your gifts and abilities and experience.  Some people want to use the ‘recession’ as an excuse not to do the things that would be for their highest good or to charge less for their services.  Our global economics are always fluctuating.  I have watched how people buy into the fear consciousness even if their personal circumstances haven’t changed.  It is all about being in balance and learning moderation, an area in which I have been challenged and have had many lessons to learn.

Now is the time to change your furnace filters, as the air is chilling out (been a chilly summer, more than usual)
and the house heat is being turned up.  I pay a bit more for the non allergenic filters that capture more.  The fibers appear to be thicker in the filter and more of a comfortable feeling.

(food alternatives & health)
Baby Food:
Was in the health food store today and overheard a conversation between the owner and a customer.  The customer wanted to buy oats for the little one as he / she was having a hard time digestion a rice cereal.
Rice cereals are easier for little ones to digest, and is used as a digestive aid in the Asian culture for those who have been sick.  (Cooked into a soup like mixture called Conji (Conjee). The rice is easier to absorb than wheats, etc.

When first starting a child on foods, the foods needs to be easy to digest and the child should be started on rice cereals or vegetables way before any sugars or juices are added.  We are so excited to get the little one to eat people food but we forget that we do not want them to develop a sweet tooth.  The owner was right on keeping the fruit juices away for a bit till the child has developed a taste for the cereals and veggies.  Personally I would start on a plain basic cereal (pablum) before getting the ones with the added tastes.

Rice cereal and yams are an excellent veggie to start with and we can make our own and dilute it with mothers milk or water to make a smooth mixture.  Try only a tiny bit at a time.  Don’t expect the little one to eat a full tablespoon at the first sit in.  Maybe just a finger tip first and build it up.

Be careful how you start the little one on food.  Many of our little ones are very sensitve to glutton and milk.  Look out for diarrhea, constipation, hives, throwing up, and colic.  All signs of digestion troubles and sensitivities.

If you are nursing and the little one is constipated, maybe looked at your own diet and see what you can add to it to help: more flax or oils.  As the baby consumes what you do.

(herbs and more)    this is about the time to buy your horseradish roots

This plant is a perennial, and only the root is being used.  It grows from 1 – 5 ft. tall.  Horseradish has lanceolate leaves, 8 – 12 inches long, 4 – 5 inches wide (similar to comfrey).  The flowers are white flowers with a two celled pods.  The main root is usually 12 inches long, 1 ½ - 3 inches thick and tapers to a conical shape.  Root is yellowish, scaly, pungent odor when scraped.  Horse radish is a member of the mustard family.

                                      Books

“The Shamanic Way of the Bee” by Simon Buxton.  I am not much of a reader anymore, as it takes quit the book to intrigue me, along with easy reading and understanding.  This book is amazing.  A friend lent it to me, and I am so grateful that I opened it up.  Here is a chance to learn more about how important our honey bees are and the culture around the bee keepers.  My respect for them both is huge.  Enjoy!!!

                                      Gardening

Just started to facilitate a preserving course with a good friend and so many insights are being brought out, not only from the class notes that we are gathering but to information that I am hearing.  When you hear of someone that is so busy that she is still tring to harvest her garden, I see how slack I have become.   What really got me to think is that I have learnt to freeze or process the veggies and fruits within the day of bringing them in.   We can enhance our intake of healthier garden products by growing our own, buying from local farmers or from stores in your town that support the local farmers.  So a seed for thought…..

No matter where you live: apartment, condo, house, in town, out of town, acreage, or on a farm, what can you grow inside or outside in order to add to your pantry for the fall or winter or to harvest that day and use.  Even though I harvest parsley, sage and dill for the winter, whether I dry it or freeze it, I could still grow it inside during the cold months.  That is something on my to do list. to consider.  If you are limited and don’t have the gardens, can you grow your herbs inside?  Or can you grow them in planters outside.  Ex;  Peppermint grown in a planter outside your door, will provide you with a leaf for teas (upset stomach, indigestion) along with keeping the ants away in the summer.  Wander through the garden stores during the cooler months and see what you can create around you that is fun to do (gardening), to harvesting, and to enhance your health by always having it on hand whether from the pantry, freezer or planters.
