Crystal & Minerals : Taught in Grade 3
 
Igneous Rock:
Molten rock that has cooled and became a solid rock.  They can form with or without crystalization and below or on the surface of the earth.   Over 700 types of Ingeous rocks, mostly found below the earth surface.
Examples are: pumice, obsidian, and granite.
 
Sedimentary Rock: 
Formed either within bodies of water or on the surface of the earth.  The sedimentary rock is formed by sediment and collection or minerals and or organic matter.
Examples are:  sandstone, shale, limestone.
 
Metamorphic Rock:
Rock that has under gone a transformation.  This is due to temperature and pressure that causes a chemical change.  Metamorphic rock is a large part of the Earths crust.  These rocks are grouped or classified by their texture and by their mineral and chemical substance. 
Examples are: Slate, Marble, Schist, Quartzite
 
Amethyst (mineral consisting of iron & aluminum, form of quartz): used in jewelry and small carvings.  The European soldiers used to wear amethyst for protection.
 
Calcite (carbonate mineral): in pure form is white, the impurities will create the different colors.  It is said to be formed from dead sea animals and can be found in caverns.  Used in chewing gum, soap and many other products in the market.
 
Citrine (form of Quartz):  used in jewelry,
 
Fluorite (mineral) : toothpaste, carvings, telescope & camera lenses, glass, enamels, cooking utensils, jewelry, used in steel production, and in aluminum.
 
Hemitite: used in hinges, handles, mattress springs, make-up, watches, garbage cans, blenders, toasters, can openers, watches
 
Kynite (Blue) porcelain for sinks and toilets, dishes, piping
 
Muscovite: make- up
 
Pyrite (iron sulfate): is a mineral and used in solar panels, radio receivers.  Not good to used is building products like bricks and stones as it will deteriate.
 
Quartz (oxide mineral): watches, mirrors, glasses, computers.  Other forms of quartz are amethyst, agate, onyx, carnelian, jasper, tigers eye.
