Jerry White on the benefits of wearing CARDIOSTRIDE SHOES     Feb. 2010 article
 
[Jerry is a research physical therapist by trade and gives an educated view of what can be gained from simply wearing these shoes for a few hours a day.]
 
The weighted shoes are certainly one option for helping with weight control, knee problems, fitness and a host of other benefits.  I will discuss them first.    Secondly I want to let you know of some of the interesting types of new applications with reflected infrared light, magnetic bracing, and a non medical lubricant and anti-inflammatory agent that could possibly give folks with knee problems a lot more pain-free years out of their knees.

As you know I was in Physical Therapy, sports medicine practice, ran the Shriner's gait analysis and physical therapy laboratory, and taught Biomechanics to Physical Therapy students.   The discovery of some of the following information has been some of the most exciting of my career. 
 
Using these shoes daily creates a resistive exercise, can mechanically correct for gait anomalies and as you'll note, show some very interesting side benefits. 
  • In studying work physiology, we found that the first 40 minutes of aerobic exercise burned only the residual blood sugars, everything after that was straight fat burn.  We find it very unlikely that busy, pain sufferers will ever build to that level unless we can ramp it by adding something like this to their lives allowing them to make gains without much change in their hectic schedules.  Remember that these shoes can be worn all day and give an average 25% increase in basal metabolism.  That means 6 to 10 hours of low level exercise, every day as one goes through the hustle and bustle of life.  This will burn upwards of 650 calories just in doing the average daily activities.  As people want to ramp it up from there, they can add a brisk walk, 3X per week or more, this is equivalent to nearly 1.5 times as much burn as walking stairs and won't compromise the joint because you are not bearing weight on the increase knee bend as on stairs. 
 
You'll be amazed that there is virtually no strain on the knee during the walking.  
 
For those with stressful lives, lowered immune function, and poor sleep the secondary gains are enormous in better sleep, improved digestive function, enhanced bone density, reduced stress and better lung function. 
  •  A major mechanical effect occurs when the leg is swinging through the swing phase of gait and has weight at the end of the foot.  It actually un-weights and takes the pressure off the knees.  Like a sponge, this allows better drawing of the waste products from the cartilage.  Then when you put the weight on the knee, it will then force the nutrients back into the cartilage.  This is incredibly important because the cartilage has no blood supply and this is the only way that it gets this exchange of nutrients and waste.
  • One of the more interesting first time factors we have seen is called ACTIVE FUNCTIONAL STRETCHING.  This means that the hamstrings and muscles around the pelvis get longer just by walking.  When this happens, it accomplishes two major objectives:    
                -- The hamstrings lengthen, allowing the knee to swing more freely and relieves pressure on the knee in stance phase.
               --  Tightening of the abdominals:  The Iliospsoas muscle and the low back muscles are lengthened and the abdominal muscles are tightened, effectively tilting the pelvis backward and taking the stress off the exit points for the nerves of the spine, making this a great help in back problems.
  • Because of the pelvic tilt correction, some folks will lose AS MUCH AS 1.5" AROUND THE WAIST MEASUREMENT IN AS LITTLE AS A WEEK!   
  • Another major area of gait correction is that because the weight in the shoe is at the end of the foot in swing phase, it can correct how the foot hits the ground and takes many of the deforming and pain causing stressors out of the knee once you shift the weight to that leg.
 
For these and many other reasons, I HIGHLY recommend these babies for knee problems, weight control, and muscle and ligamentous correction of the abdominal, hip, knee and foot mechanics!
  
Other factors that may really help with knees:
  • Enhanced hydration for the disc in the knee.  There is a way of treating water that can correct this easily.
  • A Far InfraRed reflecting knee wrap - enhances strength and reduces the effects of acids in the knee (a major cause of joint deterioration).
  • Nikken "Bio-Directed Joint" - a complex of Cetyl Myristoleate, a natural compound found in mice that make them immune to arthritis.
  • Elastomag technology.  - a neoprene type of knee sleeve that will allow for the correction of mechanics, blood flow and knee function
  • OsteoDenx for the normalization of calcium usage and potentially allowing the reabsorption of bone spurs
 
As you have studied, we know these deteriorations occur because of lifestyle, stress, and environment (including nutritional problems). 
 
The future is VERY exciting in the type of things we can do for ridiculously little money.  You might listen to the CD by Joe Higdon about some of the insurance providers and their predictions of how some of these non-invasive, simple and incredibly inexpensive changes could dramatically change the face of health and perhaps reduce the costs of the American Health bill by as much as 1/3 in just a couple of years.  Without these advances we could well not be able to afford what is coming.
